NYFA’s Free Workshop and Other Events for Artists
WHAT: “Independent Artist” a tuition-free daylong workshop for Atlanta area artists
WHO: The course is open to artists across disciplines, including visual, literary, film, theatre, dance/performance, new media and other artists.
WHEN: Sunday October 3rd, 2010, 9:30AM – 4:30PM
WHERE: Hammonds House Museum, 503 Peeples Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30310
CHARGE: The workshop is free to selected artists. The workshop is highly subsidized. Therefore, those accepted must commit to show up on time and to stay for the entire day to be accepted into the workshop.
HOW TO APPLY: SUBMISSION DEADLINE is September 17. Selected artists will be notified on September 24.

New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Program Officer Rory Golden will present “Independent Artist” a tuition-free daylong workshop for Atlanta area artists across disciplines. The workshop and other NYFA events in Atlanta are offered in partnership with area five area arts organizations: The Atlanta Printmakers Studio, The B Complex, Dashboard, Hammonds House Museum and Wonderroot.
Golden will deliver "Independent Artist," a day-long workshop for artists across disciplines. This one-day course expands the skill set and knowledge of artists at all career levels with a desire to increase income and professional acumen while also increasing exposure.
Rory delivers practical information through short lectures, hands-on activities and individual coaching to develop new skills and to impact the entire group’s awareness and skills. The workshop is not purely about delivery of information. It is interactive, intensive and highly participatory. It involves coaching conversations that empower you to grow in your creative work and in your career.
The workshop will cover these topics:
* Individual Assessment
* Creating and living from your vision
* Speaking and writing about your work
* Crafting effective goals and objectives
* Funding landscape for Creative Workers
* Fundraising strategy for your projects
* The Grant Process: elements of the proposal and budget writing
* Other topics relevant to artists across disciplines.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Rory Golden comes from a lineage of artists. He brings strong experience in supporting artists and an active artist’s professional practice to his position at NFYA. As Executive Director at the Center for Book Arts (2000 - 2004) in New York, Rory established various new programs to support artists. These include a new exhibition series, a letterpress broadsides poetry reading series, a workspace artist-in-residence program for emerging artists, and a tuition-free class for emerging writers. He left the position in 2004 to pursue his own challenging creative projects.
Rory has exhibited his artwork widely in both solo and group shows at venues such as Eyedrum and the Spruill Gallery in Atlanta, the Denver International Airport and both the San Francisco and New York Public Libraries. His work has been recognized with fellowships from Yaddo, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Blue Mountain Center and the National Academy of Fine Arts. Recent grants include an Idea Capital Grant, a Puffin Foundation Grant and a recent research grant from Duke University Libraries Special Collections. His work was recently featured in Art Papers magazine’s 11th annual art auction.
