Dear Clients,Colleagues and Friends,

Georgia's fiscal health has suffered greatly since the beginning of the nation's economic crisis. As the Legislature and Governor have attempted to close each year's revenue gap, our budget has sustained deeper and deeper decreases. Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) has lost 84% of its funding since FY 2008; the largest budget cut suffered by any state agency. The national average for state support of the arts is $1.00 per capita; in FY 2011, GCA received 8 cents per capita. With the profound losses the arts industry has sustained so far, it seems strange to say that the toughest legislative season is ahead of us, rather than behind us. With ongoing state budget revenue shortfalls (forecasted shortfalls are at least $1.2 billion), our arts budget is at greater risk now than ever.

Governor Deal's FY2012 Budget Proposal recommends that GCA be eliminated as an agency to become part of the Department of Economic Development. This can be seen as a positive step towards recognizing the importance of your nonprofit arts businesses as economic engines for the state and can provide additional value through the close association of GCA with our friends in the tourism and film industries, which are collectively the Creative Industries. Unfortunately, our budget was recommended for additional cuts for this year (FY 2011), totaling 86% since FY 2008.

WHAT IS GCA DOING?
We continue to work with our colleagues at Georgia Assembly of Community Arts Agencies (GACAA), which is Georgia's statewide arts advocacy network organization. They are participating in, and will have a strong presence at, Arts Advocacy Day, January 25, at the State Capitol. By executive order, GCA staff may not lobby and, therefore, cannot participate. However, we will work to build the record of the public value of the work of artists and arts organizations in an effort to help elected officials understand the important role the arts play as an economic engine for Georgia. I began requesting one-on-one meetings with key legislators in the Georgia House and Senate after the November election to educate them on the reality of GCA's role in supporting this vital segment of our state's economy. Georgia Council for the Arts is also working with GACAA to provide economic data that supports Georgia's nonprofit arts industry through results from the GCA Economic Impact Calculator, which will be launched for the entire industry later this month. This unique online calculator produces incremental sales tax revenues and economic impact figures for an arts project or a full year's programming for any nonprofit arts organization in Georgia; these are reliable numbers to share with your city, county, and state representatives. Further, the GCA website contains information on the value of the arts.

The bottom line is this: Georgia's tourism (the state's second largest industry) and film industries could not exist without the arts industry of our state; Georgians cannot afford additional reductions in public funding. In fact, GCA needs additional dollars for FY 2011 and 2012 just to match its grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, or Georgian's federal tax dollars will remain in our nation's capital.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Participate as an active member of the GACAA Advocacy Agenda. Make certain you are signed up to receive advocacy alerts, and when you receive them, take action. Participate in the arts advocacy events they host, including Arts Day at the Capitol on January 25th. If you need information, GCA's Arts Advocacy Now! presentation is available on the agency website.

Engage your elected officials. Invite them to arts events. Schedule meetings with them and share your economic impact story. Tell them about one life that changed because you offer arts programming and/or arts education. Help increase visibility for the Value of the Arts messaging. Most of all stay connected and stay active by asking your board members to share these messages with legislators and elected officials.

Grumbacher paint is looking for accomplished artists who can teach two hour acrylic workshops at a major retailer. Specifically, we are looking for those capable of demonstrating a still life, landscape, seascape, and floral. We have developed a flexible curriculum in acrylics for an artist to use or to adapt it to fit the artist’s style. Compensation is $100/workshop.

The artist will teach approximately two to four workshops per store per month and the artist will have flexibility in their scheduling. The workshops will be geographically located all over the U.S. and Canada. All teaching materials will be provided to the artist at no cost.

Across metro Atlanta, 11 museums and historic homes will participate in the sixth annual Smithsonian magazine Museum Day, opening their doors to visitors at no charge.

Participating will be the Archibald Smith Plantation Home in Roswell; Art on 5 in Atlanta; Barrington Hall in Roswell; Bulloch Hall in Roswell; the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Global Health Odyssey Museum in Atlanta; the Hammonds House Museum in Atlanta; the High Museum of Art in Atlanta; the Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth; the Marietta Museum of History; and the Museum of Design Atlanta.

Among the metro participants, Gwinnett County’s Hudgens Center offers a compelling exhibit by Augusta painter-printmaker Tom Nakashima. Many of Nakashima's works are large-scale, covering entire gallery walls, and are carefully gridded pieces composed of countless small snips from magazines, placed to create a mosaic image with depth and impact. The High Museum of Art, meanwhile, has among other worthy shows "Dalí: The Late Work." Admission at the High is normally $18 for adults.

For those interested in making a day trip, there are some worthy options, including the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville and Reinhardt College's Funk Heritage Center in nearby Waleska.

Last year, more than 300,000 people in the U.S. took advantage of Museum Day. This year, 1,300 museums in all 50 states will participate, the largest number ever.

New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Program Officer Rory Golden will present “Independent Artist” a tuition-free daylong workshop for Atlanta area artists across disciplines. ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Rory Golden comes from a lineage of artists. He brings strong experience in supporting artists and an active artist’s professional practice to his position at NFYA. As Executive Director at the Center for Book Arts (2000 - 2004) in New York, Rory established various new programs to support artists. These include a new exhibition series, a letterpress broadsides poetry reading series, a workspace artist-in-residence program for emerging artists, and a tuition-free class for emerging writers. He left the position in 2004 to pursue his own challenging creative projects.
Rory has exhibited his artwork widely in both solo and group shows at venues such as Eyedrum and the Spruill Gallery in Atlanta, the Denver International Airport and both the San Francisco and New York Public Libraries. His work has been recognized with fellowships from Yaddo, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Blue Mountain Center and the National Academy of Fine Arts. Recent grants include an Idea Capital Grant, a Puffin Foundation Grant and a recent research grant from Duke University Libraries Special Collections. His work was recently featured in Art Papers magazine’s 11th annual art auction.

"Overcoming the Odds: Success Strategies for Young Black Males"

Free workshops are held by the Community Council of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc. (CCMA) on Saturday afternoons, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm, at public libraries in Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties. Each workshop, "Overcoming the Odds: Success Strategies for Young Black Males", includes self-assessment exercises, an interactive workshop, lunch, a keynote speech, and an open forum, at no cost to participants. A flyer and schedule of workshops are attached.

Please spread the word to young black males between the ages of 18 - 28, and encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity. Feel free to attend a workshop yourself, and to bring someone with you. You may also invite males of other ethnic and age groups to attend workshops. Game Testers “Glitch” Game Testers are looking for 10 new participants for this summer. Participants will be paid $8 per hour and be expected to attend from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday from June 1 to July 23.

Harvard University Announcement

No tuition and no student loans

Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."

If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!

Art@Work recently took visit to Malcolm Fontier. About Malcolm. As co-founder and lead designer his unique style, and his creative approach to life in general, form the foundation of our line and our fun studio environment.

Malcolm’s style is hard to categorize with its modern, yet approachable aesthetic. His multi-cultural upbringing, eclectic interests, and a love for pushing the boundaries may tell part of the story. Malcolm also has a rare ability to tackle any project with everything, yet not take anything too seriously. Our products are a fusion of this unique perspective and a practical, problem solving industrial design background—all fueled by his infectious energy and a love for adventures, both in and out of the studio.

Malcolm seems to be on a personal mission to explore every corner of the world and meet all the characters he can along the way- hence the need for the perfect carryall! He prefers his work and his vacations as hands-on and on-the-go, fluid-like affairs. You can be sure a bag and wallet of ours as well as his sketchbook were along for the ride on every adventure—whether it was a stay in Rio, island hopping in the Caribbean or his recent motorcycle trip from Atlanta to Halifax, Nova Scotia!

Summer Employment Initiative for High School and College Students

On March 8th, the FAA will advertise vacancy announcements for students seeking summer employment. The Summer Employment Initiative is designed to attract talented students to the workforce for summer employment opportunities into entry-level positions and provide positive work and developmental experience.
Position Openings:

Miscellaneous Clerk and Assistant, FV-303-C
Management Assistant, FV-344-D
Management and Program Analyst, FV-343-F
Engineering Technician, FV-802-F

Duty locations: FAA Headquarters, all regions, and centers and some field locations.
Note: Specific FAA duty locations will be posted on vacancy announcement.
FAA regions and centers (field locations) will post separate vacancy announcements.
Eligibility: Applicant must be a student who meets all the following requirements:

United States Citizen
Enrolled or accepted in a half-time or full-time course schedule;
Age 16 or older (by the closing date of the announcement); and
Possess a grade point average of 2.0 or above on a scale of 4.0.

Appointment Type: Temporary appointment
Duration: Not to exceed 6 months (April through September)
Benefits: Students can earn sick and annual leave – depending on length of appointment
Work Schedules: Full-Time or Part-Time
Minimum Qualifications: A "student" is defined as a student enrolled in a high school, vocational and technical school, undergraduate program (associate or baccalaureate degree) or graduate program. Students must be enrolled in or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student (diploma, certificate, etc.). Must be at least the minimum age required by Federal, state, or local laws and standards governing the employment of minors. Students must be taking at least half-time course load, as defined by their academic institution; and must maintain a 2.0 grade point average on a scholastic average scale of 4.0.

Flux Projects is proud to present Brett Osborn and Michael Brown, known collectively as “Osborn Brown,” as it next project in Lenox Square mall. Their installation “Mike’s Drive” is on view during mall hours through the end of February.

"Osborn Brown" define their work as Situationalism, or recontextualizing the mundane in order to value the real. In our hyper real reality where everything has been elevated to the point of being “art” (Reality TV is an example) they focus upon calling attention to this false elevation of mundane events. In “Mike’s Drive” what is projected is imagery of Mike and Brett driving around the neighborhood. There are no crashes or police chases, no accidents-- nothing that would make this event extraordinary.

Mike’s Drive” was previously presented at Le Flash 2009, a one-night public art festival produced by Flux Projects and created and curated by Cathy Byrd and Stuart Keeler. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called Le Flash the “Best Event of 2009.”

Lenox Square is one of the premier malls in the Southeast and a microcosm of Atlanta, attracting over 100,000 diverse visitors per day. “Mike’s Drive” continues Flux Projects’ month-long presence in this exciting venue.
Flux Projects supports artists in creating innovative temporary public art throughout Atlanta. The organization produces new platforms for artistic experimentation that engage a broad audience in their daily lives, beyond the walls of traditional arts venues. We challenge artists to make exceptional, surprising work that inspires Atlanta and fosters an awareness of the richness and diversity of the city’s creative culture.

Mayor’s Youth Program Presents Annual SHRM Workshops

Required Workshops for Summer Internship

It’s an exciting year as the Mayor’s Youth Program (MYP) welcomes the 59th Mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed, and kicks-off the New Year with its annual workshops presented by the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM). The workshops will be held every Saturday throughout the month of February (6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th). The workshops serve as prerequisites and a requirements for students who are requesting summer internships. Students should choose one Saturday to attend the workshops being held from 8:30am – 1pm at Atlanta Workforce Development Agency. Each workshop is 50 minutes long covering the following topics: Time Management, Communications, Ethics, and Cartown -interactive game to teach students the importance of ethics in everyday life experiences.

The admissions department together with the exhibitions department present the 2009 Georgia High School Drawing Competition, an exhibition of the top 50 drawings juried by SCAD professors of foundation studies.

Entries from private and public high school and home-schooled students, grades 11 and 12, were selected based on aesthetic awareness, composition, technique, design, spatial perception, originality, quality of presentation and color perception. The top 10 winners are offered scholarships to attend SCAD upon application and admission to the university. Exhibition is free and open to the public.
